As part of the Climate Change and Business Conference 2026 in Auckland, industry experts explored the latest developments in replacing gas with more efficient, lower-emission alternatives across New Zealand’s buildings.
New research to be released in August explores the economic realities of Aotearoa New Zealand’s transition away from gas. Assessing impacts across both residential and commercial users, the research examines how households and businesses can be supported through the transition, lessons from overseas experience, and the implications of key energy policy decisions, including the future role of LNG. This session will explore policy options to ensure gas remains available for those who need it most while maintaining affordable and reliable energy for New Zealanders. Together, the findings provide a practical framework for managing the transition in a way that is economically sustainable, equitable and resilient.
