How a CO₂ Hot Water Heat Pump Works

A hot water heat pumps absorb warmth from the air, amplify it and transfer it to heat water. Therefore, they are also referred to as ‘air-source heat pumps’. Hot water heat pumps use electricity to operate the compressor rather than heating an electric element. Because of this CO₂ hot water heat pump system is nearly five times more efficient than a conventional electric water cylinder with an electric element. They save energy, save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the electricity generation.

1. Cold water connection

Cold water enters the hot water cylinder at the bottom of the tank. The tank can be located indoors or outdoors dependant on the system installed.

2. Cold water enters the compressor

The hot water heat pump compressor located on the exterior of the home draws the cold water from the cylinder.

3. Compressor heats the water

The compressor pulls energy from the ambient air, converts it into heat energy and transfers it into the CO₂ refrigerant, heating up the water.

4. Hot water returns to cylinder

Heat energy is transferred from CO₂ refrigerant to cold water by heat exchanger in compressor.

5. Temperature is controlled

The controller measures the temperature from the bottom of the tank and this process continues until the temperature reaches 59°C

6. Hot water on demand

Water is taken from the top, where it’s at its hottest and delivered into your home
