Why choose hot water heat pumps?

Reduce energy use and carbon emissions

EMISSIONS 75% reduction in energy use compared to gas water heaters and standard efficiency electric elements.

Save Money

Reducing energy use also reduces operating costs, permanently.

Hot water all year

Even in the coldest winter temperatures CO2 and R290 heat pumps perform excellently. Guaranteed hot water even at -20°C, and exceptional performance the rest of time with average air temperatures.

Long term cost certainty

Switching from gas avoids the spiralling cost of fossil fuels, and sudden price hikes.

Environmentally friendly refrigerants

Apricus Eco only use natural refrigerants CO₂ and R290 (propane), for their lowest Global Warming Potential (1 for CO2, 3 for R290), and zero Ozone Depletion Potential.

Minimal maintenance

Top quality heat pumps, cylinders and components, from leading global manufacturers ensures reliability is maximised and maintenance minimised.

Why choose Apricus Eco?

Calculate DHW load
  • 24 hour demand
  • 2 hour peaks
  • Seasonal demand profile
Consider site-specific requirements
  • Temperatures; flow, return, Building Code compliance
  • Ring main; e.g. an older building with uninsulated ring
    main and high heat loss
  • Space available; external and/or internal plant area
  • Electrical capacity available
  • Minimum winter air temperature
  • Sensitivity to noise levels
System design
  • Most appropriate refrigerant; CO₂ or R290
  • Heat pump output and cylinder size
  • Hydraulics; series or parallel, direct or indirect, expansion, pipe sizes, valves, ring main integration
  • Site-specific layout
  • Wiring, controls and BMS integration

Commercial business example of hot water heat pumps installed at a halls of residence

Commercial Installation Example

Waikato University

Apricus Eco is working at Waikato University to remove all gas water heaters on the Hamilton campus. The University has installed FlowSmart CO₂ and R290 hot water heat pump systems on halls of residence, laundries, sports facilities and office conversions. With a choice of different heat pumps, the team can make technology decisions that optimise performance for every site’s needs. The installations have seen up to 75% reduction in energy for hot water, with associated cost and carbon emissions savings. All the systems are modular, which ensures excellent levels of redundancy and resilience. The systems deliver all the hot water for hundreds of students, who love their hot showers!

The University of Waikato aims to become carbon neutral by 2030. Currently, 33% of its energy consumption is from gas

Yann Lemonnier

Utilities Engineer Waikato University

We urgently need to shift our heat and hot water production to a more sustainable solution. Our biggest concern was providing a sustainable solution that fit the end users’ needs. Our gas assets were oversized and did not necessarily meet the end users’ expectations.

Apricus Eco has been very thorough in their approach by talking to both the end users and our team to understand what the expectations were (end user side), and how our team wants to evolve from the old system to a modern solution. We haven’t heard any complaints since the systems were installed; some have been installed for 2-3 years. There was no issue with the Apricus Eco solutions integrating with our existing infrastructure.

Responsive

Apricus Eco has always prioritised understanding the client’s needs by thoroughly examining every aspect of the projects.

Their main focus was to meet our goals, including transitioning away from fossil fuel energy and delivering a solution that is both affordable and energy-efficient. The systems have proven to be very reliable. There was only one occasion when the system’s temperature didn’t meet the stakeholder’s standards, but Apricus responded quickly to resolve the issue.

Dependable

Apricus Eco has always been very responsive in its approach. Last year, we only had around two months before the end of the year to finalise the designs of four difficult projects.

Despite the tough deadline, they finalised a design, finished the installation of one of the projects before Christmas, finished the design of the three others, and ordered all the parts before the end of the year. These three projects were difficult as the scope changed multiple times. We could fit these projects into our 2024 budget thanks to their reactivity.

The team at Apricus have specialist expertise in the design, specification and supply of energy efficient, renewable heating systems.  We offer the best technologies to combat climate change whilst keeping your organisation running smoothly.
